The Ashley Bryan Medal
Mr. Bootman was presented this award at the Children's Literature Conference in November 2006. The Ashley Bryan Medal is for the most notable contribution of a body of works to African American Literature for children. This award represents recognition of individually distinct works, with exceptional literary and visual quality, as well as respect for children's understandings, abilities, and appreciation.

This is awarded to an author or illustrator of the best picture book to read aloud to children ages 8-12.

The ALA Scheider Family Book Award was presented to Mr. Bootman in 2006 by the American Library Association. This is a National Award which honors an author/illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.

  Nominated as one of six titles that USBBY is recommending as for the Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities Exhibition in Bologna 2006, by the IBBY Documentation Centre of Books for Disabled Young People in Sandvika, Norway. This title will be kept in the permanent collection of the centre in Norway.  
     
 

In 2005 the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights made honorable mention of Dad, Jackie, and Me through the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award.

Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Book Award 2004 given to an African American illustrator for an outstandingly inspirational and educational contribution, that promotes understanding and appreciation of the culture of all people and their contribution to the realization of the American Dream. This award commemorates the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and honors Mrs. Coretta Scott King.
 
      

From January to February 2005 "Almost to Freedom" was featured on a CBS Showcase-Celebrating Black History Month.
